What is the type 1 diabetes?
T1D is a complex autoimmune condition characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to chronic high blood sugar and the need for lifelong insulin treatment. Its acute and long-term complications significantly impact the quality and expectancy of life.
Therefore, research in this field is essential to broaden our understanding of this condition, generate evidence to guide decision-making, and help improve the care, well-being, and health outcomes for people living with T1D, their caregivers, and health systems.
STEP T1D Study is
The STEP-T1D project analyzes recent geographical and temporal trends of T1D within Valle de Aburrá, Antioquia, Colombia.
While T1D cases are rising globally, data remains critically scarce in Latin America. To bridge this gap, our study integrates multiple data sources to accurately estimate incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates. By employing advanced epidemiological methods—such as capture-recapture and spatiotemporal modeling—we identify shifting patterns and generate future projections.
Our goal is to strengthen public health surveillance and guide better decision-making for patients and healthcare systems. Ultimately, STEP-T1D aims to serve as a replicable model for other Latin American regions seeking to transform complex data into life-changing health strategies.
